Dwayne Chism, Ed.D
Dr. Dwayne Chism, Ed.D., is the former Dean of the School of Education at Peru State College and a 2013–2014 Distinguished Alumni Graduate of the University of Nebraska at Omaha. In 2018, he founded Shifting Perspectives, Inc., an organization committed to cultivating effective leadership and supporting schools in meeting the diverse needs of each learner through intentional practices. A respected voice in the field, Dr. Chism has authored numerous articles for the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) and is the author of the 2022 book Leading Your School Toward Equity, which was named a finalist for the Excellence in Equity Award by the American Consortium for Equity in Education.
Prior to founding Shifting Perspectives, Inc., Chism held several leadership positions in the education sector spanning over 25 years. He served as a Dean for higher education, principal and teacher, gaining valuable experience working directly with students and educators in the classroom, and as an Executive Director for School Support for the Omaha Public Schools. In this role, he was responsible for supervising, coaching, and supporting 26 of the district's school leaders in improving academic achievement, increasing graduation rates, and closing achievement gaps. Crediting his array of experiences, Chism has a deep understanding of the challenges facing schools and educators today at all levels.
Some of his additional work includes, serving on the Wallace Equity Task Force for the State of Nebraska, coaching aspiring leaders of color across the country, consulting with school districts around equity driven leadership, and authoring several published articles and a book on topics such inclusivity and equity. Chism is a founding member of Shifting Perspectives, an organization dedicated to empowering leaders across the country. Through Shifting Perspectives, he provides training, mentorship, and support to individuals who are seeking to make a positive impact by eradicating inequities within their learning spaces.
Throughout his career, Chism has been a strong advocate for equity and excellence in education. He has worked tirelessly to ensure that all students, regardless of their background or circumstances, have access to high-quality educational opportunities. Through exercising his voice, he continues to lead efforts to create more inclusive and equitable education systems for all.
